A new year begins and at Symantec we want to be sure that you are ready for 2015.  After two major security issues in 2014 (Heartbleed and Shellshock) there are no safe assumptions in website security, so being a fit and resilient organisation ,prepared to tackle the unexpected should be your main motivation in 2015. While predicting the future is a fool’s game, it doesn’t mean we can’t pick up a few pointers from the past.

Before knowing what you demand, we need to know who you are; while website security should always be at the forefront of any online business, a new Symantec infographic emphasises  the importance of paying attention to whatever your role in your company is.

As an IT specialist, you need to know that according to Symantec research; two thirds of medium-sized companies have never conducted a vulnerability assessment on their website. As an IT manager, it is interesting to know that more than half a billion (552 million) identities were exposed in 2013 as a result of data breaches.

As mentioned previously, we need to know about you in order to be able to help. But what do you need? Which information do you need to protect? Are you the kind of person who downloads apps or do you share content on social media?  Perhaps you complete small money transactions or check your bank account via the Internet?

There is no need to worry if you do not know what to be concerned about in each situation.  At Symantec, we want to help you implement the best security solutions for your business. In order to help you determine your requirements, we have prepared a self-assessment quiz that will help you to find the best security solutions for your business, right now.

port.jpg

By simply completing our quiz, you will be able to download a customised report for your business that will offer the best advice to keep you safe. Start the quiz HERE

Now you know what you need to do to get your website site into peak condition, but what’s the next step? The easiest thing is to get in touch with someone from Symantec. After all, we’re the specialists when it comes to website security and keeping your business healthy: that’s why 93 percent of the Fortune 500 and 97 of the top 100 US banks worldwide are using our products.

When you make your get-fit New Year’s resolutions for website security, think of us as your personal trainer.

EV Backups in System Status

The Enterprise Vault System Status might sometimes show entries like this relating to backups (or lack of them):

EVSystemStatus.png

How does Enterprise Vault get this information?

Well the information is stored in SQL system tables, and can be read by anyone - it's just read by System Status and then made to look nice.  Here's an example of one such script that will give you output showing when databases were backed up:

SELECT sdb.Name AS DatabaseName,
COALESCE(CONVERT(VARCHAR(12), MAX(bus.backup_finish_date),101),'-') AS LastBackUpTime
FROM sys.sysdatabases sdb
LEFT OUTER JOIN msdb.dbo.backupset bus ONbus.database_name = sdb.name
GROUP BY sdb.Name

Android in the Enterprise Part 2: 4 Steps for Protecting Against Threats on the Device

Adopting Android into the enterprise can have its challenges, but it's not impossible.

Android-in-the-Enterprise-2-v2.jpg
In our first piece in this series, we discussed the challenges for IT administrators in adopting Android into the workplace. Android presents many security obstacles to IT due to its open source platform, variety of device manufacturers, carriers, and multiple versions of mobile operating systems. The main challenge for the enterprise is securing company data. Although there are many obstacles, they are not insurmountable.

While the enterprise prefers to use secure choices in their mobile devices, they also want to provide employees with flexible and familiar choices. Here are some tips for IT administrators to help secure the Android platform substantially, so employees and businesses can have the best of both worlds.

1. Regulate Android Use
Some enterprises choose to simplify this challenge by regulating Android usage. IT admins can choose to only allow a limited number of certain Android models or limit access to certain apps and content, therefore giving admins better control over the security of the data as there are fewer variables to secure. However, without a proper mobile management tool, it can be difficult to enforce policies and prevent user workarounds.

2. Supplement Android with Mobile Device Management (MDM)
Mobile device management is a baseline solution that helps to solve the challenges that Android presents in the enterprise.  MDM can provide protection such as enforcement of the usage of passwords and pins, remote device locking/wiping, and even data encryption. MDM gives IT greater control over the device and is well-suited for corporate-owned devices, however, it can introduce challenges when policies are too restrictive for users, or if policies need to be customized at the app and data level. While MDM helps to solve the challenges of Android in the enterprise to an extent, MDM in itself is not full protection.

3. Add Additional Threat Protection for Android
MDM alone does not protect from malware and other threats. By supplementing Android devices with threat protection, the devices then can be protected from threats such as backdoors, mobile malware, grayware, malicious websites, data stealing apps as well as the ability to report threats to the enterprise. Android OS in particular may introduce risks from apps downloaded through the largely unregulated 200+ app stores available. With a threat protection solution, apps can be scanned and evaluated prior to download.

4. Bring Protection to the Apps with Mobile Application Management (MAM)
Regardless of whether the device is Android or not, MAM provides control at the app level by allowing admins the ability to apply policy controls to individual apps, without interfering with the user experience or user privacy. Developing a solid MAM solution enables admins to have control over apps, regardless of device ownership, and manage the delivery, updating and remote locking/wiping of mobile apps. MAM also monitors app performance, app configuration, provides reporting and tracking services, usage analytics, and app wrapping for corporate apps, while leaving personal apps and data untouched.

While Android presents many challenges in the world of the enterprise, admins can now keep up with the growing popularity of Android in the consumer market and appease employees’ preferences by implementing these tips.

  • Cause:

When running SOI, the Pre-boot configuration architecture (x86 / x64) must match the target OS architecture (x86 / x64)

Eg:

Windows7 SP1 Enterprise x64 SOI -> requires WinPE 4.0 x64 preboot configuration

  • Solution:

1 - When running a SOI for a x64 OS create a X64 Pre-boot environment:

96.jpg

2 - If using NBS for the initial deployment, remember to select the newly created PXE boot image and set x64, also remember to enable "apply NBS settings immediately" and save changes

3 - Test the SOI job:

Dublin to Dubai, California to Cape Town, Symantec Employees Bring Holiday Cheer to Their Communities

$

From Dublin to Dubai, California to Cape Town, Symantec employees around the globe came together to celebrate the holiday season by giving back to their local communities. Food drives, toy collections, fundraising events and volunteer activities brought employees together to celebrate while making a difference for those less privileged.

Throughout the year, Symantec's community relations committees work closely with the Corporate Responsibility team to identify local nonprofits working in Symantec's philanthropic focus areas: science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education; online safety; diversity; and environmental responsibility. For Symantec, being a responsible, contributing part of society means applying its assets --money, talent and time -- to those issues that are material to Symantec's business.

But during the holiday season, employees' concerns turn to the people in their local community -- those who may be hungry or who are unable to provide gifts for their children. And they come together to make the season a little brighter for their neighbors.

Australia/New Zealand

In its 10th year, the Pacific Region's SymanteClaus event focuses on teenagers -- a group that is often overlooked in toy drives. Employees in Australia and New Zealand are encouraged to purchase gifts for teens, which are donated along with a cash donation to the Salvation Army for distribution. The Symantec Marketplace -- the company's local corporate merchandising partner -- hosts a special SymanteClaus section each year with teen-appropriate gifts to make giving as easy as possible.

20150112-csr-Sydney_Office5.png       20150112-csr-Perth_Office2.png

Dublin, Ireland

In Dublin, employees participated in the site's third annual food drive benefiting St. Vincent De Paul. They hoped to be as successful as they were last year, when they distributed 115 food hampers and helped 185 families with food, fuel and clothing.

The site also set up a Giving Tree to benefit the children at Temple Street Hospital.

And Dublin didn't neglect the quarter's focus on online safety volunteerism, sending employees to participate in the Junior Achievement Kids Technology Workshop, where they delivered a beginners network concept class to primary school children. Brian Bambrick, John Handley, Sean McAdam and Paul Mangan all taught classes and engaged with the children to develop their interest in the idea of a network, the Internet and how everyone is connected in the digital age.

Mountain View, California, USA

Mountain View also focused in on online safety volunteerism during October's National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Nine employee volunteers visited the Alviso Boys and Girls Club to teach cybersecurity concepts to more than 100 students in three classrooms.

20150112-csr-MTV-Boys_and_Girls_Club.jpg

The headquarters site also continued its partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank. In years past, the site hosted a food drive while simultaneously collecting funds for donation. However, for every dollar donated, Second Harvest can purchase two meals -- far more than what donations of individual food items can deliver. So focusing on cash donations, the site set a goal of raising $100,000 -- and surpassed it, raising a total of $101,838.

Eric Hummel's team in HR adopted two families -- a family of four and a single mother with two small children -- through the Salvation Army of San Jose's Adopt-a-Family Project. One of the families had four children all asking for bikes, with the parents asking for a coat and a down comforter. The team provided each of the families with everything they asked for and all of the children were able to get clothing items. In addition, they provided $225 worth of gift cards for food purchases.

Green Park, UK

In Symantec's Green Park office, they also focused on the quarter's theme of online safety volunteerism, sending employees to TeenTech to host several sessions on the vulnerabilities of the Internet and password security. This took the form of a "Cyber Spies" challenge, which introduced the teens to "packet capture" -- a technique a hacker might use to listen in when two friends are using a non-secure instant messaging service. The teens' challenge was to use the information from this non-secure conversation to guess a password to a Facebook account and to treasure hunt questions on finding personal information through social media channels.

In the spirit of the holidays, Green Park employees also collected more than 100 gifts to benefit the children at Naomi House and Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. Naomi House is a children's hospice, providing support to children and young people with terminal illnesses. Rainbow Trust Children's Charity provides emotional and practical support for families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

20150112-csr-uk.png

Singapore

Singapore's food collection -- initiated by the HR team there -- benefited the Boys' Brigade Share-A-Gift food donation drive, a national community service project focused on the collection and distribution of food donations to the less fortunate in Singapore. Employees contributed many high-need items, including 44 bottles of cooking oil, 289 tins of canned food, 105 packs of instant noodles and more.

Cape Town, South Africa

In Cape Town, employees bought presents for the children served by the Masibambane Creche, which provides adoption services, child development centers, foster care, and infant care centers and nurseries. After Santa (Cape Town employee Wade Corin) distributed the gifts, the team painted the outside of the crech to add a little color to the children's lives.

Waltham, Massachusetts, USA

The Waltham office collected more than 70 toys for Toys for Tots again this year, challenging each department to rally their teams to bring in toys.

20150112-csr-waltham-Toys-for-Tots.jpg

Heathrow, Florida, USA

The Heathrow site put their efforts into supporting the Orange/Seminole Foster Children's Association in Central Florida. As part of an effort to provide foster children with holiday presents, the Heathrow site provided 355 children with gifts. Employees bought gifts based on children's gift request tags as well as cash donations that the site's "volunteer elves" used to shop for the children's presents. In addition, the engineering team held a benefit breakfast to aid the effort, raising more than $1,300 when combined with corporate matching to help the needs of the organization.

20150112-csr-heathrow-Symantec-Holiday-Donations_2014.jpg

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai's holiday collection resulted in the delivery of 73 gifts of toys, as well as 4,000 AED in vouchers for groceries and household products, to Senses Residential Care Home, a residential center providing safety, comfort and care to special needs children whose families are unable to support them.

20150112-csr-dubai.jpg

Roseville, Minnesota, USA

The Roseville community relations committee held a food drive in December, benefiting Keystone Community Services, a community-based human services organization in St. Paul, Minnesota. It offers a variety of human service programs for all ages at multiple sites, including three food pantries, emergency food assistance and a comprehensive seniors program that provides Meals on Wheels and other services.

When committee leader PJ Nadeau delivered the sites' 200 pounds of collected food, she was told, "We just knew we could count on Symantec once again!"

Chicago, Illinois, USA

In Chicago, employees spent an afternoon supporting Feed My Starving Children, which relies on volunteers to pre-package meals that are formulated for malnourished children, and then delivers these meals to children in more than 70 countries around the globe. Symantec's Chicago-based team packed an amazing 22,000 meals, which will feed 60 children for the entire year.

20150112-csr-FSMC-Chicago-Sales-Team.jpg

Germany

Symantec's Germany offices in Munich, Ratingen, Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg collected funds at their respective Christmas team dinners to benefit organizations fighting Ebola.

20150112-csr-germany.png

Lindon, Utah, USA

Finally, in Lindon, employees participated in both the United Way of Utah County's Sub-for-Santa program, helping 10 families and providing gifts for a total of 28 children, and a separate gift drive for Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Thank you for your efforts and Happy New Year from the Corporate Responsibility team.

How time flies!  It seems like it was just yesterday that I was doing my best Mike Powell impression to avoid the slushy sidewalks outside the Hilton.

We couldn’t be more excited for this year’s show and as always, it promises to be the largest and most important legal technology event of the year.  Symantec has a new booth location (#1410) right in the middle of the exhibition floor and we are excited to present new demos of eDiscovery Platform 8.0, Enterprise Vault 11.0, Enterprise Vault.cloud, and Data Insight 4.5.

In addition to our booth presence, we are thrilled to be hosting a full lineup of Super Sessions on Tuesday, February 3rd in Petit Trianon.  Our agenda includes the following CLE-eligible sessions:

We are also hosting a final session at 3:45pm that will focus on Information Governance Best Practices in Europe.

In other activity, our Product Management team is eager to hear your feedback on three important roadmap ideas. If you would like to contribute to our understanding of your needs in these areas, please respond to this 1-question survey to schedule some time to meet with Product Management.

Finally, we wanted to invite everyone to attend a special welcome Happy Hour in Petit Trianon (our Super Session room) on Tuesday, February 3rd from 5:00pm – 7:00pm.  We will be raffling off two iPads, so feel free to come on over, grab some refreshments, and possibly walk away with some brand new Apple gear.

One final piece of advice for LTNY newcomers…don’t forget your boots, trust me.

Have a safe trip and we look forward to seeing everyone in New York!

Private items journaled?

$

Exchange server journaling, and having those items journal archived by Enterprise Vault is something that many organisations have implemented, both in Europe, the US and the rest of the world. A question which is sometimes asked though is whether items marked as private (or sensitive) are journaled.

If you think to the emails that you create in Outlook (for example) there are options available to mark an item as private or sensitive. Do they get journaled by Exchange?

The answer is: Yes.

Just because a user has deemed something as private when they sent a message to someone, doesn't stop Exchange producing a journal report which like all other journal reports will end up in the journal mailbox. Those will then be archived as normal.

summary

In today’s digital age, basic antimalware protection is common, however, deploying full layered protection is not. Between daily headlines with data breaches, and our recent experience in promoting migration from Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 to 12.1, we know many customers are overlooking the full protection they’re entitled to.

The year SEP 11 was released (2007) about 700,000 unique malware variants were discovered. In 2011, the year Endpoint Protection 12.1.x was released, that number had increased to 400,000,000.  As the threat landscape continues to evolve and change, the number of newly discovered variants will continue to increase.  Miscreants of the underground have found new forms and disguises to compromise the security of their targets.

On January 5th, 2015; SEP 11.0.x and SEP Small Business Edition 12.0 reached End-of-Support-Life (EOSL) and are no longer entitled to support, LiveUpdate, virus definitions or security updates.  Customers who have not migrated to Endpoint Protection 12.1.x should reference the “Best practices for upgrading to the latest version of Endpoint Protection 12.1” KB http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163700. Customer experiencing issues during the migration process should open up a support case under “SEP 11 Migration”.

Traditional anti-virus requires Symantec to have a submission of the threat in order to build signature based detections.  Signature based detections address the bulk of mass malware, but are always one step behind the bad guys.

It’s time to transition to a better protected world - SEP 12.1 installed and configured to run the full protection stack. SEP 12.1 includes many important new protection technologies that extend our capability to protect and secure our customers:

  • Symantec Insight, one of the advanced features of SEP 12.1.x, can detect threats based on files characteristics and reputation scores rather than relying solely on virus definitions.
  • Real-Time SONAR replaces TruScan to identify malicious behavior of unknown threats using heuristics and reputation data in real time.
  • Download Insight examines files that are downloaded through Web browsers, text messaging clients, and other portals. Download Insight uses reputation information from Symantec Insight to make educated decisions about a file's safety and improve system performance by only scanning at-risk files.
  • Insight Lookup can detect malicious zero-day executable files that may not be detected by AutoProtect, and sends information from the files to Symantec for evaluation. Insight Lookup makes malware detection faster and more accurate.
  • The Intrusion Prevention policy includes browser intrusion prevention, which uses IPS signatures to detect attacks that are directed at browser vulnerabilities.

It is important to understand the risks of using anti-virus alone and the benefits of the new technologies Symantec products offer. As a trusted security partner, we seek to identify, educate, and assist customers with installing and configuring SEP 12.1 for optimal protection. For more information on best practices for Symantec Endpoint Protection, go to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH181685

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, A Celebration of Symantec Service

$

Every year on MLK Day, Americans across the country come together to serve their neighbors and communities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of service to humankind. Today, we celebrate all of you, the acts of community service you perform, and the diverse viewpoints and perspectives you bring to our business.

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve.”

So said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Baptist minister and social activist who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. Every year on Martin Luther King, Jr.(MLK)  Day, Americans from across the country come together to serve their neighbors and communities in recognition of his legacy of service.

The MLK Day of Service, a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative, asks Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. It’s the only US federal holiday observed as a national day of service.

Symantec employees around the globe heed this call to service throughout the year. Local-level community relations committees organize and execute site-wide volunteer opportunities in support of Symantec’s philanthropic focus areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education; online safety; diversity; and environmental responsibility.

In places like South Africa, Symantec employees are building relationships with local nonprofits making a difference for their neighbors. In Sweden and Australia, employees are helping children to protect themselves online and eliminate cyberbullying.  In the US and the UK, employees are equipped with the knowledge and materials to teach online safety basics to K-12 students. And in the spirit of making the holidays a little bit brighter for their less advantaged neighbors, employees around the globe organized many food drives, toy drives, and service activities at the end of 2014. And employees are always finding ways to apply their unique skill sets to benefit nonprofit organizations, including these four employees who shared their careers journeys virtually with children at Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

HB3_0.jpg

Dublin employees participated in the site's third annual food drive benefiting St. Vincent De Paul during the holiday season.

Green Teams around the globe are looking at ways to reduce Symantec’s environmental footprint. Their quarterly Green Talks series, featuring speakers from organizations like the Rainforest Alliance and Fabien Cousteau’s Mission 31, are open to all employees and seek provide perspective on pressing environmental issues. And initiatives like the One Mug, One Planet campaign are encouraging each of us to consider how our everyday actions contribute to our overall company-wide impact.

At the individual level, employees have access to programs like the employee Matching Gift, Dollars for Doers, and Nonprofit Board Service Programs. These programs provide corporate support for the organizations and issues that are most important to employees on a personal level – even when those organizations and issues don’t align with Symantec’s corporate philanthropic priorities. Our Volunteers of the Quarter – people like Raj Singapori, Claudia Hulenaar, Melaney Smith, and the India Corporate Responsibility team, among others – have successfully maximized their contributions, combining their personal time and expertise with matching cash donations from Symantec.

The India CSR team organized 160 employees to fill 1,500 backpacks with school supplies for children in the Pune region.

In recognition of each of your commitments to the communities in which you live and work, Symantec was recently named one of the 50 most community-minded organizations in America, something the Corporate Responsibility team is very proud of, and something that all of us can be proud of!

In addition to being a champion of community service, Dr. Martin Luther King was also, of course, a prominent leader in the U.S. African-American civil rights movement. MLK Day was instituted in 1983 – after a long struggle – to commemorate his contributions to this movement. The Symantec Black Employees’ Network (SBEN) chapter in Heathrow is marking the day by marching in the 31st annual Orlando, Florida MLK Day Parade. They are also gathering for a Plant Seedlings for Civil Rights event on the University of Central Florida Campus.

How are you serving your community this MLK Day? Contact us and let us know what your passions are. We’ll have you find a way to serve in ways that benefit you, your community, and Symantec!

Lora Phillips is Symantec's Senior Manager, Corporate Responsibility.
