What’s more important: securing mobile devices or enabling employee access?

Personal device usage is a chronic challenge in organizations today. In the U.S., 52% of employees use their smartphones to check emails with file attachments. However, it is up to employers to mitigate the potential risks and benefits of a BYOD policy.

Research by MarketsandMarkets predicts the global market for BYOD and enterprise mobility to quadruple in size over the next four years. Improving worker productivity is a key driver for organizations to adopt a BYOD program. Nearly half of IT managers in the U.S. feel that BYOD programs improve worker productivity.

According to a study of CIOs by Gartner Executive Programs, 38% of organizations plan to stop providing devices to workers by 2016. Without specific BYOD policies in place, security risks become an increasing concern. For example, because some mobile devices are designed to share data in the cloud, it is easier for data to be duplicated and moved between applications in the cloud.

According to a study by Intel, cost savings take a backseat to productivity benefits for the switch to a BYOD program. The question becomes: What’s more important, securing mobile devices or enabling employees access?
