Real world tests show Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 2013 leads the pack

Symantec’s endpoint solutions, designed for consumers, small businesses and enterprises, were recently awarded top honors from Dennis Technology Labs, specializing in security testing that uses a world-class anti-malware framework.

  • Symantec received Dennis Technology Labs’ “AAA” rating and received the highest scores across every category in its Anti-Malware testing.
  • Norton Internet Security scored the highest for home protection, while Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 2013 (SEP SBE 2013) won for small business protection and Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 won in enterprise protection.

SEP SBE 2013 was the only small business solution to receive the Dennis Technology Labs AAA award. Testing was performed over a 3 month period by exposing products to live Internet threats to closely reflect the experience of a customer visiting an infected website.

As Symantec Threat Intelligence has shown small businesses are increasingly targeted by cyber criminals with nearly a third of all targeted attacks aimed at them [1].  To keep safe, SMBs need proven, effective anti-malware protection.  In the tests, SEP SBE 2013 scored highest in handling malware and legitimate applications, and generated zero false positives.

SEP SBE 2013 offers SMBs the proven anti-malware protection they need with affordable subscription-based licensing.

The Android SDK contains many tools which allows the Android developers to develop an application for the Android platform. The Android SDK tools are divided into two groups like SDK tools and Platform tools. In order to support the latest features of the Android platform, the platform tools must be customized. Using the SDK tools the developers can develop mobile application for any Android platform.

SDK Tools

The SDK tools plays a primary role in the Android application development. This tool is installed with the starter package of the Android SDK and updated frequently in order to develop the applications with most advanced features.

Here are some of the important Android SDK tools:

1. Android SDK Manager.
2. Android AVD.
3. Emulator.
4. DDMS.

Here are some of the frequently used Android SDK tools by the mobile app development companies:

1. Android AVD – It allows you to manage the components that are installed of the SDK.
2. DDMS – It allows you to debug the Android application that you have developed.
3. Hierarchy Viewer – It let's to optimize and debug the Android application.
4. Sqlite3 – Using this tool you can access the SQLite data files that are created.

Platform Tools

Whenever the Android developer installs the new Android SDK platform, the platform tools gets updated typically. The Android Debug Bridge is the platform tool which the Android developers use it directly.  The adb let's you to manage the state of the Android powered device.

Windows Search and Enterprise Vault

$

Alot has been written about Windows Search and how it works, or not, with Enterprise Vault.  The main issue comes about because you can get into a mixed bitness configuration.  By that I mean Windows 7 64 bit, with Office 2010 32 bit.  This causes problems.

Outlook Instant Search - What does it search?

Outlook Instant Search only ever searches the Enterprise Vault Virtual Vault Metadata cache. This is on top of Outlook items. The Enterprise Vault metadata that can be searched using Instant Search is things like the date, author, recipients, subject, and up to 120 characters of the message body.  This therefore excludes things like the full body content, and excludes attachments.

How can I search full content?

Image_7.png

What about that mixed bitness?

When the Virtual Vault feature was first introduced there were some issues relating to mixed bit-ness. Mixed bit-ness maens that you have 64 Bit Windows, but 32 Bit Office. In some situations this is the recommended configuration from Microsoft, and so is quite common, probably more so than you would initially imagine.

From EV 9.0.3 the issue with searching and mixed bitness has been resolved, and now you can search quite easily, regardless of the Office versus Windows bitness.

What about on Windows 8?

The ability to search emails has gone from Windows 8.  Microsoft did studies and discovered that very few people searched for mails from the 'start' interface on Windows 7 and earlier, so it got chopped out.  The net result of this is that for those users who are going to use Windows 8, then the desktop policy shouldn't be set to force WDS on.  Otherwise you'll be added work to the end-user workstations with no point - no interface exists to get that data retrieved and displayed to users. So no point in building the index - if it's even possible.

With Windows 8 then, if you're using something like Office 2010 or Office 2013 you'll have the Outlook Instant Search feature.

Personally I think the Instant Search approach is a really good way, provided users are educated to the caveats that exist around what will be searchable.  The biggest advantage is that the searching is taking place right there in Outlook, not down at the 'Start' menu area. It's far more seamless.  With Windows 8 you don't have the option of searching mail from the 'start' menu like you did in Windows 7, which makes Outlook Instant Search even more likely to the route that users take.

U.S. Justice Department Approves Use of Predictive Coding on Case

$

0

As you may have seen, recently the U.S. Justice Department approved a request to use predictive coding eDiscovery software, to sort through documents in the merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev and Grupo Modelo. Typically, cases as large as these require legal counsel to sift through millions of electronic documents in search of relevant information—an endeavor that is not only time consuming, but extremely expensive.

But innovative eDiscovery software has now reached a level of sophistication whereby computers can be trained to hunt for concepts the same way human lawyers do.

In the Anheuser-Busch case, the opposing sides discovered hundreds of thousands of documents using eDiscovery software—and spent 50% less than they would have using traditional methods. (And when 50% equates to a few million dollars—it’s easily enough to turn the heads of government agencies, their IT departments, and their legal counsel.)

Having given predictive coding software it’s first major vote of confidence, the U.S. Justice Department is likely to create a trickle-down effect throughout the public sector—where predictive coding and eDiscovery technology, in general, is being embraced and utilized at a steadily increasing pace.

Symantec is excited to see this technology advance in the public sector, and we look forward to staying at the forefront of eDiscovery innovation—offering customers cost-effective and efficient ways to approach large cases.

If you’re interested in learning more about predictive coding, eDiscovery software in whole, and how they can be used, Symantec is hosting an upcoming conference on the topic, EDGE summit. Featuring industry leaders and experts, the conference will focus on the challenges and opportunities this technology brings to the legal world.

Keeping your business out of the news.

Does your customer have a requirement for monitoring servers or for Intrusion Detection? Are they asking about Real-time File Integrity Monitoring (FIM)? Have they recently failed an IT compliance or regulatory audit?

Usually a request to monitor server activity, or user and administrative access to a server, is driven by a few business needs.

It could be a Compliance or Audit requirement, it could be to pass information to a Security Incident and Event Management tool (SIEM) or Security Operations Centre (SOC) team, but more typically it is deemed to be good IT behaviour to keep an eye on how your servers are being used on a daily basis.

Let’s think about the rationale for those points.

Firstly if you are being audited, or someone in a risk and compliance role is scrutinising your environment, the process of generating incidents which are then analysed and potentially acted upon is actually the housekeeping role that many engineers in IT operations and Security teams perform on a daily basis. It is time consuming, costly but seen as necessary to keep your house in order.

Maybe you have a  SOC team or utilise an SIEM within your environment, collecting information about user activity, be it malicious or authorised, can be extremely valuable when collating incident information and forensically understanding events that may represent a breach of some kind. Host Intrusion Detection products or File Integrity monitoring tools collect reams of this information to pass to these expensively skilled teams or systems for further analysis.

And lastly, it is deemed good practise to monitor all servers for usage and configuration changes, not just those in exposed environments and locations (e.g. DMZ servers, remote branch offices), as security comes from understanding the bigger picture in relation to where problems may lie in your estate. Visibility of all possible risks is one of the key instruments to help you determine security posture within an organisation.

So far, these business needs have described the requirement for multiple teams or employees in different roles, all working towards the same aim of having a reliable and secure IT estate. But they have not necessarily prevented an attack.

The concept of monitoring is sometimes sold as one of the easiest processes to implement within a company to improve your Risk Posture, almost a 'tick-box' exercise in some cases. However this process in reality may only result in one thing, namely that it can tell you when you may have been hacked. Monitoring does not offer either Prevention or Protection against an attack. Monitoring is just one of the processes required within an estate to be (re)actively informed of security risks.

But does your CISO, Auditor or Compliance officer really just want to understand that the various IT teams are monitoring a situation?  Surely they would be more interested in a more permanent and proactive solution to stop the attacks in the first place? I believe they would, especially if they understood that the total cost of ownership of a preventative solution could actually be less than a monitoring one. I am talking about HIPS- Host Intrusion Prevention.

Firstly let's dispel some myths about HIPS that are usually mentioned by vendors selling Monitoring solutions;

It is a nightmare to configure!!- Not true, built in policy templates speed up deployment, and require no skills such as advanced scripting to use full functionality.

It requires constant attention and policy tweaking!!- Sorry, wrong again. Policies can be set and forget, as they relate to the role of the server rather than a platform or application release.

Security policies have to be switched off or disabled to update servers. Again-a misnomer, software deployment and management tools can be allowed to patch and update target machines, yet at the same time the policy is 100% active, and denying Administrators the ability to accidentally patch outside the change control window. Some HIPS products offer security to such a deep level that patching can actually be reduced to once a year.

It only works on current Operating Systems and kernels- not true, they can support even legacy operating systems such as Windows NT/XP/ RHEL4.

So given that HIPS is a proactive approach to server security, has minimal management overhead, is simple to configure, ensures greater server uptime and reliability and even allows the patching mechanisms to be secured, why wouldn’t you look at this instead of monitoring?

I will give you one last thing to think about. IDS and Real-time FIM products create sometimes hundreds if not thousands of events per day per server. Unbelievably, this is sometimes described as a Good Thing. In reality, what you actually want is a product that has told you the key thing- I have prevented your server from being attacked, or your data from being stolen. Why do you have to wade through masses of data via monitoring, when a Prevention product only reports something that is suspicious? Which would your SOC or SIEM product prefer I wonder?

With HIPS protecting a server, you do not need to monitor every action or log entry to detect incidents as you are already blocking the possibility of attack. Therefore events per server per day can be kept to the absolute but necessary minimum. Sorting the Wheat from the Chaff you might say.

In summary, I am referring of course to Symantec’s Critical System Protection product, which handily includes not only HIPS and HIDS, but Real-time FIM too.

So the balance of security and monitoring can be struck to not only keep the hackers away and the auditors happy, but more importantly keep your business out of the newspapers.

Short Reflections on attending the California CyberSecurity Task Force

$

On May 13, I was pleased to represent Symantec at the inaugural California CyberSecurity Task Force meeting. California government officials and private-sector leaders met to discuss a comprehensive CyberSecurity plan for the state.

Attendees included officials of many state agencies, academia, the National Fusion Center Association (NFCA), the FBI, the Sacramento Utility District, Cyber Watch West (CWW), and private companies such as Verizon, Bank of America and Symantec.

“Because of the interconnectedness of government and private-sector IT assets, collaboration has become crucial” said Michele Robinson, acting director for the Office of Information Security.  “The ultimate goal,” she added, “is to collaborate and work together to improve CyberSecurity for the state.”

The Task Force stated strategic roles are to act in an advisory capacity in the following areas:

  • Identify areas where stakeholders can improve statewide collaboration and information sharing to identify potential threats.
  • Review areas where coordination will enhance security, emergency response.
  • Developing and reviewing a statewide Cybersecurity strategy.

The meeting allowed discussion on several topics, all with the goal of establishing a framework and overall plan for statewide CyberSecurity. Among the topics discussed were information sharing between governments and the private sector, challenges to industry, such as the need for improved laws and regulations, and the need for increased CyberSecurity research and education.

The Keynote Speaker was Mark Weatherford – The Chertoff Group – and former DHS Security Deputy Undersecretary.    He addresses many interesting points to the group including calling out 3 types of outside attackers:

  • Cyber Criminals (Russia gangs and organizations leading the pack)
  • Espionage (current 90% from China)
  • Others

Mark pointed out that Cyber issues are the top concern for all organizations regardless of size.  He said, “If interest is at the CIO/CISO level, we have an issue!!  It needs to be at the CEO, COO, CFO level.”  He quoted Baker’s Law – “Yeah, our Security Sucks but so does theirs”.

He then focused on an area that is widely recognized but lacking the focus required.  He pointed out we are getting our lunches handed to us in the USA – lack of Cyber Talent.  I think this is exciting for Symantec as we launch the beta of our new Academic Alliance program!!  Discussion was around how this could be addressed at the K-12, community college as well as the university level.   It then continued to discussion of immigration issues (We have some of the best and brightest coming to be educated in California as well as the rest of the USA, then after they are trained we force them back to their home counties).  The discussion was highly engaged and very enlightening.  We are at a crossroads in our cyber security world based upon this lack of talent issue.

The Presidential Executive Order on Cybersecurity was the focal point on the agenda for this initial task force meeting.  Much of the discussion was centered on how this task force could influence the directive to NIST.  One of Mark’s comments was that almost 40% of the Cybersecurity focused companies in the US are California based (including of course Symantec).

This kicked off a major discussion that was discussed repeatedly throughout the day around how California is in a unique position as the largest state to have the desired influence on NIST. Then, for the rest of the afternoon there were panels discussing information sharing, challenges to industry, research and education.

Concluding the day was State CIO Carlos Ramos and Mark Ghilarducci, secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency. They mentioned that specific examples of changes that could improve CyberSecurity efforts in the state include things like whitelisting certain software in the wake of a bring-your-own-device trend that has introduced an unprecedented amount of applications onto the state’s networks. Another tactic would be to require more rapid patching of operating systems and applications to cut down on vulnerabilities and security holes. Another tactic is to limit the number of users with admin privileges on any given network.

“These are things that help harden our networks, and a lot of this, just like any kind of security -- it’s always about layers of security,” Ghilarducci said. “The CyberSecurity situation is no different. We want to make sure we incorporate as many of the things thread into our CyberSecurity work environment. It may seem very intuitive and basic, but across the board, it’s not consistent.”

Granular Database Permissions with Enterprise Vault

One of the things that any even vaguely security conscious Enterprise Vault administrator and SQL Database Administrator should be concerned about is minimum-level of permissions for things like the Vault Service Account.

With the release of Enterprise Vault 10.0.3, and of course, the accompanying Discovery Accelerator and Compliance Accelerator products a document was released giving more details on how to secure the DA/CA/EV databases.  Here is the link:

This tip was passed on to me by a former colleague, so thanks for that Paul Juster.

How to Handle Big Data Without all the Big Headaches?

$
0
0

More and more information is becoming readily available to companies and they are leveraging it to advance business and give consumers what they want. This practice known as “big data” has the potential to yield big opportunities, as well as its share of management headaches if not approached strategically. In the latest CIO Digest article “Big Data Without Big Headaches,” Symantec lays out three basic strategies that IT leaders should consider when leveraging big data. Getting the strategies right will enable companies to make effective decisions and realize the business value of big data. But get them wrong, you can end up with incomplete information and introduce a New Coke. With these data-driven strategies in place, companies like Asia Pacific Telecom, Telefonica de Espana, and Teradata have seen results in both financial and operational performance. Indeed, embracing big data doesn’t have to come with big headaches. To get more in-depth information about these strategies, check out this article: http://bit.ly/11KYAsl
