Plant-for-the-Planet Partnership Raises Awareness about Environmental Sustainability at Vision Symposium event series

Symantec Vision is our flagship conference to demonstrate thought leadership and accelerate sales through impactful experiences. The conference delivers face-to-face insights, information and experiences needed to secure and manage an information-driven organization. Vision takes place as a global, multi-day Vision flagship event in North America and as regional Vision Roadshows in several locations around the globe.

At Symantec, we strive to embed corporate responsibility throughout our business, and we see our corporate proprietary events as a great opportunity to walk the talk, and to put into practice our commitment to environmental and social sustainability. At Vision we integrated an event sustainability strategy that minimizes the event environmental footprint, positively contributes to social benefit, and delivers economic efficiencies.

Engaging and supporting local communities as well as international sustainability causes when planning an event is just one best practice component of designing and operating a sustainable event.

After partnering with Plant-for-the-Planet for the first time at Vision in Barcelona in 2012, we continued our support for this children and youth organization at Vision EMEA, a roadshow taking us to Dubai, Munich, Paris and London. Investing in this legacy program that raises awareness of issues relating to climate change and environmental protection through education and planting trees aligns with Symantec’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Plant-for-the-Planet is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness amongst children and adults about the issues of climate change and global justice. The organization was started in Germany in 2007 by Felix Finkbeiner, then a nine year old boy, who was inspired during a class project by learning about the story of Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He started the campaign with the idea that children across the world could plant one million trees per year in their country. Plant-for-the-Planet has since grown to a global movement and now manages the Billion Tree Campaign of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), also inspired by Wangari Maathai. The campaign’s patron is H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Under the Plant-for-the-Planet Billion Tree Campaign, people, communities, organizations, business and industry, civil society and governments are being encouraged to plant trees to improve the CO2 balance and enter their tree planting pledges online. The campaign raises awareness of the many environmental and social benefits of trees including:

  • Mitigating the impacts of climate change through the sequestration of carbon
  • Contributing to local economies through products such as timber
  • Supporting the environment through soil regulation, erosion control, regulating water cycles and providing habitats for biodiversity

While the goal of the campaign was initially to plant at least one billion trees worldwide each year, it has grown immensely and now has a goal to plant 14 billion trees planted worldwide.

Walking-the-talk:  Showcase and communicate

Sustainability at Vision is communicated prior, during and post event like for example a dedicated sustainability website (example: Vision Symposium London), inclusion in HTML campaign and in onsite program guide among other.

As an example the keynote at Vision Symposium in Munich concluded with a presentation by Frank Giessen, Senior Manager Business Development, who explained to the audience that the very nature of Symantec’s business -- assuring the security, availability and integrity of our customers' information-- requires a global culture of responsibility. And, that at Symantec we embrace strategies and take action to improve our society and environment. He outlined our support for Lichtblick Hasenbergl, White IT and in particular Plant-for-the-Planet, where he was joined by a young Plant-for-the-Planet Ambassador highlighting the Plant-for-the-Planet partnership and cause encouraging attendees to sign up to the pledge to plant trees at the onsite stand in the Expo area.

For Vision Symposium EMEA series a pledge site was created to collect pledges during event series: http://int.plant-for-the-planet.org/plant/helpnow.aspx?id=73.

10,932 pledges were collected in total for Vision Symposium series to date for Dubai in Munich.

In Munich a total of 6.737 trees were pledged. Symantec broke the ice by doing the first pledge to plant 3.775 trees by donating $5,000. These trees will be planted for Symantec at Plant-for-the-Planet’s grounds in Campeche, Mexico. A call to action made in the opening keynote and in several communication channels achieved additional 2.962 pledges from employees, customers, partners and one analyst to plant trees.

Vision Symposium Paris and London are still to take place in October, so we will see how many pledges we will collect in total from customers, partners and employees.

We look forward to bringing you more details on Symantec’s sustainable events initiative and progress over the next few months.

You can visit the following website to enter your pledge for Plant-for-the-Planet, or reach out to your local Green Team or Environmental_Responsibility@Symantec.com to learn about other ways to support environmental causes in your region. If you'd like to learn more about event sustainability, please send an email to Claudia_Hullenaar@Symantec.com.

  • “Simplesmente funciona!” – Terry Green, Gerente de IT, Autochair

Every Dollar Makes a Difference for Victims of Domestic Violence, Trafficking and Homelessness

Who are we and what do we do:

Ruby’s Place is the first domestic violence shelter incorporated in the State of California and Alameda County in 1972. We serve women and children who are homeless due to domestic violence and human trafficking. Our purpose is to foster a wellness based and culturally responsive community providing emergency shelter and supportive services to women and children who experience domestic violence, human trafficking, and homelessness.

The mission and purpose has expanded throughout the years to become a shelter with comprehensive services to assist in the healing process and begin the journey to becoming independent and stable. Last year 83% of our clients came to our facility due to a violent crime and 17% due to non-violent homelessness. Out of the 245 unduplicated clients we served, 153 were children.

Ruby’s Place is not a shelter as one would imagine with a large room with beds and a soup kitchen, we are a HOME secretly tucked away in a residential neighborhood where we blend into the community. Our HOME looks and functions much like yours does, with 42 women and children. Everything that you need to live in your home is provided to these families that come to stay with us. From daily hygiene products to food to counseling services -- we offer it all to our clients.

These families may be different from yours - however, they have been severely victimized, abused, and traumatized. Our shelter is a place for healing, stabilizing and empowering women and children to become strong and capable of living happy and healthy lives.

How These Issues are Affecting Women and Children Here in the US and Worldwide:

  • Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime — that's more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined. Still, more than one-third of us have never discussed the issue
  • Every year, 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is murdered by her current or former partner
  • Every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes
  • Children who live in homes where there is domestic violence also suffer abuse or neglect at high rates (30% to 60%)
  • 27 million – Number of people in modern-day slavery across the world
  • 1 million – Number of children exploited by the global commercial sex trade, every year.
  • 32 billion – Total yearly profits generated by the human trafficking industry

The Good News and How You can Help:

Little tip for finding database tables

0
0

I often find myself peeking into Altiris databases with the goal of finding a particular piece of information. The only problem is, I rarely know what table it's stored in.

There are three options at this point,

  1. Stare vacantly at the database, scanning through every table name waiting for an internal bell to tinkle
  2. Google till you dribble
  3. Run a SQL Query to find your table

In case you are an option (3) type of admin, this is the query to use,

SELECT *
FROM sys.tables
WHERE Name LIKE '%BIOS%'

SELECT *
FROM sys.views
WHERE Name like '%BIOS%'

Where here, in this instance, I'm looking for tables and views whose name includes the string "BIOS". This is a truely invaluable little query, and very helpful when trying to update reports across database versions. It's even quite handy if you simply are feeling a bit nosey.

SHA1 certificate shown as insecure or with mix content warning on Google Chrome 39

0
0

As of late 2014, SHA1 certificates and it's SHA1 trust chain (not including the Root CA) will be considered insecure by Google Chrome.

A three step process will increase the severity of the warning:

  1. Initially SHA1 certificates that expire on/after 2017/1/1, and which contain SHA-1-based signatures in the validated chain, will be shown the "Secure, but minor errors" icon.  This is a lock with a yellow trianglealert icon

  2. Severity will increase thereafter, where:
SHA1 certificates that expire between 2016/6/1 and 2016/12/31, inclusively, and which contain SHA-1-based signatures in the validated chain, will be shown the "Secure, but minor errors" icon. This is a lock with a yellow triangle. alert icon

SHA1 certificates that expire on/after 2017/1/1, and which contain SHA-1-based signatures in the validated chain, will be shown the "Neutral, no security" icon. This is the blank page icon, as shown by HTTP URLs.Blank page icon

  3. Finally Chrome will render websites with SHA1 certificates that expire on/after 2017/1/1 and which contain SHA-1-based signatures in the validated chain, with the "Affirmatively insecure, major errors" icon. The "Affirmatively insecure, major errors"icon is a lock with a red X. red https

To resolve this issue SHA2 certificates must be installed.

Google: Gradually sunsetting SHA-1

What about the Cross Root Chaining? For example:
Chain one : >>    (1) example.org-int1(sha256) <- int1-ca1(sha-256) <- ca1-ca1(N/A)
or
Chain two : >>    (2) example.org-int1(sha256) <- int1-ca1(sha-256) <- ca1-ca2(sha1)<- ca2-ca2(N/A)
or
Chain three: >>   (3) example.org-int1(sha256) <- int1-ca1(sha-256) <- ca1-ca2(sha256) <- ca2-ca2(N/A)

As per Ryan from Google:

"On all of our platforms, it will prefer (1) if ca1 is trusted. It would only go to (2) if ca1 is not trusted.
On the platforms where this is the case, the peer supplying ca1-ca2(sha256) as part of the handshake ensures that (3) is preferred, if ca2 is trusted."

O mundo do FSS

International Day of Charity - Celebrating our Philanthropic Efforts

"Let us recognize charity for what it is at heart: a noble enterprise aimed at bettering the human condition. On this International Day, I call on people everywhere to act on the charitable impulse that resides in every human being -- to start giving and to keep on giving.

Whatever the case, such generosity and kindness, with no expectation of financial gain, can make profound differences in human well-being."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Message for the International Day of Charity, 5 September 2014

Last week the world celebrated the life of one of our most remembered philanthropic leaders, Mother Theresa. Designated by the United Nations as International Day of Charity, each year on September 5th, the anniversary of the passing of Mother Theresa, the UN asks the world to recognize and celebrate the vast impacts that charitable giving has on our world’s most pressing issues.

At Symantec, philanthropy and charitable giving is core to our mission to protect and manage information so that everyone is free to focus on achieving their goals. In FY14, we donated approximately USD $28 million in cash and software to more than 20,000 nonprofit organizations globally, and employee volunteering increased by 23 percent over FY13 and 73 percent over FY12. We continue to explore ways to increase not only the amount of time and money we contribute, but the impacts of our contributions through a focus on skills-based volunteering that enables our employees to donate their expert skills to maximizing social impact.

Across the world, we are involved in numerous partnerships that enable us to donate vital time and resources to local communities, and our employees are also spearheading their own efforts. Our activities are driven by a tailored community investment strategy, which aligns to four key areas serving the objective of creating a sustainable and diverse future for the technology industry:

  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education; equal access to education
  • Diversity
  • Online safety
  • Environmental responsibility

In honor of this International Day of Charity, we look forward to bringing you updates on some of our largest partnerships across the globe targeting these focus areas.

Latin America: Mitigating Climate Change and Empowering Local Communities through the Rainforest Alliance

According to recent data, Mexico emitted 709 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMt CO2e) into the atmosphere in 2006, is the twelfth largest emitter in the world based on total greenhouse gas and the agriculture and forestry sector represent 16.3% of total emissions in the country. Additionally, the country is one of 12 countries in the world that together account for 70% of the world’s biodiversity.

To help combat this, the Rainforest Alliance, an international nonprofit organization whose mission is “to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior”, is working on development of a long-term initiative to reduce emissions related to deforestation while supporting economic empowerment for coffee producers in the Oaxacan region.

The region is one of the poorest in Mexico, and coffee is one of the primary sources of income. Through this Rainforest Alliance lead program Oaxacan coffee farmers will be trained and educated on various sustainable agriculture techniques such as producing shade grown coffee, reforestation of native plants, and more that will help reduce GHG emissions associated with agricultural production, while also improving yields and enabling farmers to qualify for monetary benefits through carbon credits.

US: Encouraging the Next Generation of STEM Professionals through the Boys and Girls Club of America

While the US was once a leader in STEM education and careers, today the country is struggling. For example, in 2011, only 45 percent of U.S. high school graduates were ready for college work in math, and only 30 percent were ready in science. Additionally, African Americans and Latinos make up only 7 percent of the STEM workforce (yet 28 percent of the U.S. population) and only 14 percent of scientists and 12 percent of engineers are women.

The Boys and Girls Club of America, a long standing partner of Symantec’s, is helping us achieve our goal to improve the number, qualifications and diversity of young professionals interested in STEM careers. The organization has various programs engaging youth and providing crucial training and education in technology and the sciences.

In 2013, the Symantec/BGCA STEM initiative provided funding to ten Clubs in Symantec markets. Over 800 STEM sessions took place throughout the course of the grant, engaging 1,400 Club members in STEM programming.  This year, Symantec will continue the STEM mini-grants with a narrowed focus on eight BGCA sites near Symantec offices. The targeted nature of this year’s program will allow for greater pre/post testing for impact and additional contingency funds available for general support of these clubs to continue their STEM program.

Asia-Pacific: Keeping Parents and Kids Safe Online with Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is another long-term philanthropic partner of Symantec’s helping us equip parents and youth with the education and training needed to stay safe online in today’s complex digital world.

For example, in 2013, Symantec created a partnership with Common Sense Media, Cyber Safe Kids and the Victoria Department of Education to support a pilot digital citizenship initiative, Growing up Digital. The program provides ongoing, accessible resources to Australian schools, K-12 lesson plans, interactive modules for students and parents and training for teachers. Additionally, in 2012 Symantec issued a grant to develop, pilot, and evaluate Digital Passport™ through Common Sense Media. Digital Passport is a free, web-based interactive learning tool that helps educators prepare their students to use online and mobile technologies independently.

This year, we will continue support of the Growing Up Digital pilot in Australia, including a broader support of their full program expansion in Australia. This includes supporting the development and uptake of additional tools and resources on emerging topics, launching new webinars to support educators’ use of Common Sense Media resources, and implementation of new in-person training sessions.  Additionally, in the fall of 2014, Common Sense will launch "Digital Compass" an engaging "choose your own adventure" curriculum to assist educators with integrating technology into their classrooms.

EMEA: Combatting Bullying and Empowering Youth through Friends

Statistics show that suicide is the most common cause of death amongst young people in Sweden, and many times bullying is the root cause.  Every year, 45 young people under 20 commit suicide, which equates to almost one person a week. Additionally, research from the Karolinska Institute shows that a majority of young people committing suicide have been bullied.

Symantec is partnering with Swedish non-profit Friends to support their programs to train teachers, parents and kids to protect against bullying and suicide.  In the last year, 9,000 kids, 1,200 teachers and 2,000 parents were trained by Friends. In August, Symantec was a key partner in the organization’s Manifest Against Bullying Event in Stockholm providing volunteer support and educating attendees on the role of online safety in protecting kids against cyberbullying. We also look forward to meeting with Friends in September to further define our path forward and partnership this year.
